Your pets can’t protect themselves or let you know when something is wrong, so it’s up to you to provide them with a safe and secure space during the remodeling project. And, it’s not just your cats and dogs that need attention but even small animals like hamsters and birds. 

After providing Los Angeles homeowners with many projects over the years, we’ve learned a few tips that can keep pets safe and comfortable during a renovation. Below are some of our best pieces of advice. 

Introduce Your Pet to the Workers 

At Kavin Construction, we’re not afraid of pets! If you feel that your pet will feel more comfortable being introduced to our team, don’t hesitate to do so. This way, your pet will be familiar with our workers’ voices and hopefully feel more at ease throughout the day. 

Consider Crating Your Pet 

While it might not be ideal, crating your pet is sometimes the safest option. Any comfortable, locked space works – it doesn’t have to be a cage. Although your pet may be mildly inconvenienced, it’s better than having them walk around unleashed in a construction zone. 

Be Aware of Open Doors and Windows 

During a home remodeling project in Los Angeles, you can expect some of your doors and windows to be open as our workers move in and out. They won’t be watching for a pet, so it’s important to keep an eye on your dog or cat. Keep in mind that the loud noises can startle pets and cause them to run outside – even when they normally wouldn’t. 

Watch Out for Dangerous Materials 

Construction zones are not safe for pets because there are many dangerous materials on the floor that can harm their delicate paws. Some of the things to watch for include nails, staples, tacks and fiberglass. Electrical wires are a concern, too, as some pets might try to chew through them. 

Spend More Time Outdoors 

While your home remodeling project is going on, try to get your pet outdoors more often and for longer periods of time. They’ll be able to take a break from the noise and hear your familiar voice. You can also tire them out so that they’re more likely to sleep comfortably in their crate or secure area. 

Move Out Small Birds and Critters 

Small animals in contained habitats – lizards, guinea pigs, hamsters – should be moved to a quiet room. Birds, in particular, can die quickly from paint fumes. The dust can also irritate their delicate airways. As long as they’re moved away from the dust, noise and fumes, you can keep these smaller critters safe and comfortable.
