Popular Home Architecture Styles in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a beautiful city with diverse architecture. If you’re planning to build or purchase a new home in California, it helps to know what types of architecture styles are available. It all comes down to personal taste and lifestyle – no one single style is better than another.

As custom home builders in Los Angeles, Kavin Construction has experience building all types of architectural styles. Below are some of our favorites.

Cape Cod

Many of the new construction homes in California feature the popular Cape Cod style, particularly in neighborhoods throughout Encino and Sherman Oaks. These colonial-style homes feature clean lines, large windows and a coastal feel. The space above the first floor can be left unfinished or turned into a home office.

Craftsman

Craftsman homes were inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement at the turn of the 20th century. These properties feature low-pitched roofs, overhanging eaves, tapered columns and patterned window frames. The color schemes are reflective of nature and include muted greens, browns and taupes.

Mediterranean/Spanish

Without a doubt, Mediterranean-inspired homes are one of the most popular in Southern California. They feature a blend of Spanish and Italian architecture with the characteristic red roofs. Many of these homes were built in the 1920s and 30s and now require modern updates while still keeping the integrity of the home intact.

Tuscan

An alternative to Mediterranean homes is Tuscan homes, which are both very similar looking, with the difference being that Tuscan homes have more stone and masonry work. The Tuscan-style homes we’ve built feature sprawling floor plans, beautiful arched openings and doorways and stucco siding.

Traditional

There’s no shortage of traditional homes in Los Angeles that feature sectioned off rooms for formal living and formal dining. These timeless homes are versatile and can have an open layout that is conducive for entertaining. You can also place a modern or contemporary twist on these homes by adding in large, multi-sliding doors and clean lines as opposed to arches and curvature.

Tudor

Tudor-style homes originated in the U.S. in the mid-19th century and are commonly found in wealthy neighborhoods in California. These houses manage to be warm and cozy even though they’re large. We do a lot of work in Tudor homes to update them with a more contemporary look, such as by swapping out dark colors for a lighter color scheme.
